How to Transform Unused Spaces in Your Garden

Ever wondered what can be done with that unattractive corner of the garden where the grass won’t grow?

It’s not difficult to transform forgotten corners of your garden into attractive and usable spaces.

“It’s a waste to leave side gardens and backyard corners sitting gathering weeds,” says Adbri Masonry brand ambassador and expert landscaper, Jason Hodges. “You paid good money for your land and there are clever ways to ensure you use all of it.

Areas in the backyard that are underutilised, eye-sores or those that haven’t been maintained, present the opportunity to create spaces that can be used for relaxing or entertaining with friends,” he said.

Here are Hodges’ suggestions for how to transform forgotten or neglected corners of your garden.

Fire pit

Backyard fire pits are a great way to bring family and friends together to keep warm during the winter months. Hodges recommends using ‘dry stack’ blocks so that the fire pit can be constructed and deconstructed as the weather changes. He also suggests converting it into a vegetable garden during warmer months.

Side paths

Every house has a shady side. Typically, these areas receive little sunlight and are prone to damp. Gross won’t grow, and the area can turn to mud each time it rains. A feature stepping-stone path will inject some aesthetic appeal, and provide dry surfaces for walking on after rain. Hodges suggests using large pavers, and laying them offset in a stretcher bond pattern, and fill the voids with plants to decorative stones.

Herb or vegetable gardens

Outdoor spaces often have lengths of boundary fence that are barren and in need of revitalising. Raised garden beds in front of a fence or in the corner of a garden help to cover large wall areas. Living green walls are also useful in hiding walls.

Water feature

Water features are a simple way to make the most of unused spaces. They add movement and a calming sound to the garden. For larger gardens, Hodges suggests constructing a pond, but for small spaces he says opt for a bird bath, small fountain, or Asian-style water feature.
